lauren stern is still in shock…
**NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD**
Boy, when I reviewed the season premiere of Dexter I had no clue what I was in for this season. Even with the talks of LaGuerta re-opening the Bay Harbor Butcher case, I never ever thought the storyline would be taken this far. I never thought in a million years LaGuerta would die (like early in the books, by the way) let alone to be killed by Debra. I’m still shocked that it was even considered and it just makes me more excited for what’s to come in the show’s final season. Lets face the facts though right off the bat: LaGuerta’s death sure won’t be treated like Doakes’, Mike’s, or even any of the others on Dexter’s table in the past. I mean, this IS the captain of homicide we’re talking about.
That being said, a huge question on all our minds is: What’s to come for this next and final season? The only answer I can come up with is “a lot of s—t.” Since no hints have been revealed just yet, we can only go by our predictions and what’s been done in the past. That being said, I strongly believe there’s going to be a detective who will try and investigate further. Since Angel’s officially retired, my money’s on Quinn because he’s the only one left who’s had suspicions about Dexter in the past. There is a good chance I could be wrong about this but either way, this is just the beginning of a big giant mess that will stick with Dexter until the last and final episode. This I think all of us Dexter fans can be confident about.
Aside from LaGuerta’s death, there’s a bunch of other outside storylines to look forward to, one of them being Hannah McKay. We learned this episode that Hannah isn’t going down without a fight – for her own freedom and for Dexter’s love. It’s going to be interesting to see how the situation with her arrest and escape is doing to be handled. My only concern with this is that the writers will revert back to that terrible story line where Deb was in love with Dexter. It’s looking like there will be a showdown between Deb and Hannah for Dexter’s affection and if that’s the case that alone will ruin everything that was great about the show. I really hope my impression is wrong about this it will be turned into something else but I guess we’ll all have to wait and see come next year.
As far as this season as a whole is concerned, I really enjoyed that there wasn’t one consistent storyline. In the past seasons of Dexter, there’s been one prominent killer but this is the first season where there has been multiple. The Kashka brotherhood was a great plot and I was actually disappointed it was ended so quickly. It would have been cool to see all of them on Dexter’s table but I guess the whole point of that was to push a new love interest for Quinn. Speaking of Quinn’s love life, I must say I like Jamie in that role. She out of everyone would be the only one who can keep him in gear. Also, based on my prediction above, her involvement with Quinn is just what next season needs in order to keep us on the edge of our seats.
Coming out of this season, I feel like Dexter enthusiasts are going to say “Good but not as good as Season 4.” I’m sick of that. Season 4 has been done for a long time and now more than ever, s—t is going to hit the fan in some serious ways. Even if no other season will ever compare to four in your eyes, it’s going to be worth it to see what happens in the end. I can’t wait until September 2013 rolls around and knowing my vulnerability for spoilers; I’m going to be glued to Youtube for the next year for any fraction of hints.
