lauren stern lists five artists to look out for this year…
There’s a ton of new and familiar artists coming out of the woodwork doing big things for the year 2013. But since most of them are keeping the details under the radar, it’s hard to tell whether or not anything will be pushed back or omitted. The artists below are not only some of my favorite artists, but five musicians who have somewhat confirmed 2013 plans. I can’t wait to see and hear more from these artists and the many more with exciting plans this upcoming year!
The Joy Formidable
The Joy Formidable will be one of the many indie bands to kick off this year with a new album. The trio announced a few months ago they will be debuting their sophomore album Wolf’s Law on Jan 22. and I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with over the last year and a half. This band is a fairly new band (clearly), so if you haven’t heard of them yet, I suggest you head on over to your streaming service of choice to check out their last record The Big Roar!
Ra Ra Riot
Ra Ra Riot’s new album Beta Love will also debut on Jan. 22 and I am dying to hear their follow up from Orchards. So far, these guys have done nothing but produce phenomenal music so I’m expecting this record to blow me away. I’m also expecting a tour, which I know for a fact I will be hitting up if they come to the area. I saw them with Jack’s Mannequin two years ago, and let me tell you, their performances are something you definitely do not want to miss!

Jimmy Eat World
Jimmy Eat World, a.k.a. one of my all time favorite bands in the world, announced that their new album (title still TBD) will be out sometime this year. Unlike some of J.E.W. fans, I loved Invented, but I’m with them when it comes to the band producing and recording something similar to their older tunes. I will never stop believing this band can produce something equal or better album to Chase This Light. I guess we’ll have to see when the time comes, but until then, I will be by the computer patiently waiting for a new single.
Portugal. The Man
Portugal. The Man is the only band on this list that hasn’t officially announced anything at all yet for 2013, but I still have a feeling they are going to do something big this year. I’m betting my money on a new album because this band has a reputation of recording music every year, but I guess we’ll have to see!
Andrew McMahon (formerly of Jack’s Mannequin/Something Corporate)
Andrew McMahon announced earlier this year that he is retiring Jack’s Mannequin but will be touring and producing a new solo project in the spring. Since I’ve been a fan of Andrew McMahon’ s music for 8 years now and have seen him perform live 9 times during that time, it’s pretty obvious that I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for even an ounce of this new project to surface. I’m sure it will be as amazing as ever but until it’s released, I (like many fans) am stuck playing the waiting game. One thing I do know for sure is that it’s going to be well worth the wait.
