TV Recap: The Mindy Project, ‘French Me, You Idiot’ & ‘Indian BBW’

Two months ago, when Pop-Break’s Editor-in-Chief Bill Bodkin and TV Editor Luke Kalamar asked us to write about our favorite TV couples, I chose Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) and Danny Castellano (Chris Messina). This choice was more of a premonition, as I had absolutely no idea whether or not the two would be officially together at the time. For all I knew, Mindy and Danny would just kiss and she would forget about it and run back to Cliff (Glenn Howerton of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

But that didn’t happen. Instead, Cliff got horribly dumped by Mindy at his grandmother’s funeral, leaving Danny and Mindy to pursue their romantic feelings. Swoon. Then, in episode 2, Tom (Bill Hader) and Mindy’s former sex tape assists Mindy and Danny in discovering their true feelings for each other. Even bigger swoon. It literally makes my heart melt just typing all of that. I have been waiting for the two of them to get together since Season 1 and now I get to experience gawking at them every time something totally adorable happens. It’s like the first two weeks of a new real life romantic relationship where you can’t stop smiling at the thought of seeing that person. Except in my case, I can’t stop smiling because Mindy and Danny kissed so passionately they accidentally lit a church on fire. Then, at the end of episode two, THEY SNUGGLED while reading Bridget Jones in a hospital bed. Is this all not the cutest thing ever!?

Now, part of this is definitely giggling like a little school girl, however, I was also laughing because the dialogue in these two episodes were absolutely hilarious. This is not surprising as this show is written by Mindy Kaling, but I will be the first to admit that not every episode of The Mindy Project has been perfect. Big statement for a big fan, but Kaling doesn’t always have me under her spell. As you can recall, I disliked the James Franco premiere and the subsequent episodes, and there were some Season 2 moments that were just “eh.”

These episodes were further from “eh,” though. They were almost perfect in every way. Almost being the key word there. There was one story line I didn’t really care for, and that was the Peter (Adam Pally), Jeremy (Ed Weeks), Midwife battle for the ballet clients in episode 1. I feel like this was totally misplaced and would have been funnier in another episode. I couldn’t really be so attentive to it with the Mindy and Danny lovefest going on. It just didn’t fit. Also, where the hell was Morgan (Ike Barinholtz)? He’s the one character who always wants to be up in everyone’s business and he only appeared in one or two scenes!

One great thing I can say, aside from all the Mindy/Danny stuff, is that I now like Peter a hell of a lot more than I ever did before. I really wasn’t a fan of his at first, but he’s been growing on me, and now I adore him. Other than that, my feelings towards the Schulman and Associates crew haven’t changed. In fact, I’d say they’ve grown 10x stronger. Let’s see what the rest of this season will bring.
