Pop-Ed: Best TV Shows Adapted To Movies

MacGruber

The average length of a Saturday Night Live sketch is probably right around 3 minutes. Despite that, and in defiance of God and all creation, SNL has attempted on many occasions to create full length feature films based on the characters from these sketches. After early successes with The Blues Brothers and Wayne’s World, SNL flew too close to the sun and made a string of duds that left a horrible taste in everyone’s collective mouths. Films like A Night at the Roxbury, It’s Pat, and Superstar made it seem like making a successful SNL film was impossible…that is, until Macgruber.

Based on what may be the shortest recurring SNL sketch ever, Macgruber followed the adventures of the titular Macguyver ripoff as he attempted to foil the plans of a terrorist with ambitions of taking over the world or something. It doesn’t matter. It contains some of the funniest scenes in action/comedy movie history. I don’t want to spoil them for you. Watch it for the ‘putting a team together’ montage. Watch it for the sex scenes. Watch it for celery. This movie is both true to its incredibly short original sketch and a completely new take on a genre that everyone really likes. Also Val Kilmer is great. What more could you want?
