Album Review: You+Me, ‘Rose Avenue’

Rose Ave. is the first album from folk duo You+Me, whose members are P!nk and Dallas Green of Alexisonfire and City and Colour. The album is not radio friendly at all. If you are obsessed with all thing folk music, you might like Rose Ave. Everyone else, who is not a P!nk completest, should pass on this album.

Part of the problem might be that Rose Ave. was made in 6 days and it shows. All of the songs blur together. The lyrics are forgettable. While I am not familiar with Dallas Green’s output, P!nk knows how to write clever lyrics, which makes Rose Ave. a huge disappointment.

The album contains 10 songs, but there’s no point in mentioning them all because they all sound the same. Green doesn’t seem to know that when only instrument on most of the tracks is an acoustic guitar, you have to use more than the same five chords in every song. That’s why an angry song with lyrics straight out of Motown sounds the same as “You and Me,” which is a love song. No matter how chill you are, “Baby baby, why’d you treat me so damn mean” from “Love Gone Wrong” should never sound upbeat and happy.

As a whole, Rose Ave.’s could be renamed Music to Fall Asleep To or Background Music For Sepia Tinted Family Movies. On a positive note, P!nk and Dallas Green’s voices compliment each other, but in order for Rose Ave. to be a successful album that can’t be its only selling point.

Rating: 3 out of 10

  1. What?!!! This album is amazing both lyrically and musically. The harmonies are beautiful and the songs all sound different. Who wrote this? Clearly all you want to hear is a party song by Pink. Learn to appreciate some real quality music and grow up.

    • If I wanted to hear a party song from P!nk, I wouldn’t have reviewed this album. I had high hopes for Rose Ave., but it didn’t meet my expectations. I am happy that you love this album. It just didn’t speak to me.
