TV Recap: Sons of Anarchy

Plot: The clock is ticking as SAMCRO must decide how to help Bobby (Mark Boone Junior) from losing more body parts. Meanwhile, Abel’s (Ryder and Evan Londo) school troubles aren’t going away anytime soon, as secrets that threaten all members of the Teller family and the MC are reaching their boiling points.

I’d like to reiterate how much I appreciate this show’s music choices. There are often songs that both introduce and end an episode, adding to the theatricality that is Sons of Anarchy, or as I like to call it, Hamlet with motorcycles.

Tyler (Mo McRae) is pulling double duty for August Marks (Billy Brown) and the MC and lets Jax (Charlie Hunnam) know that every 24 hours that August doesn’t give up the location of the dead pastor and his family, Moses Cartwright (Mathew St. Patrick) and others of Marks’ gang will continue hacking off another of Bobby’s body parts. Bobby, meanwhile, refuses to give intel, despite Cartwright’s attempt at a heart-to-heart. By episode’s end, Bobby loses a few fingers that are, again, sent to the club. Gross. Let’s hope this is the last of that.

Earlier, Jax asks Chibs (Tommy Flanagan), “How could I not see this coming?” regarding Marks’ retaliation. Chibs reminds him they got into this for Tara (Maggie Siff) and the MC knows the risks. The MC later confirms that Gib O’Leary (Tanc Sade) was Jury’s (Michael Shamus Wiles) son, putting together that he must’ve told the Chinese about the guns location. Jury denies this but admits to wanting Jax dead after what happened, only just getting to know the son he didn’t raise. “You had the chance to be something good for this club,” Jury says to Jax, recalling Jax’s father John Teller (Victor Newmark, actor; Nicholas Guest, voice) wanting more for the club. Jury brings up JT’s journals and suggests that he might not have been murdered – that he killed himself. In clearly not an act of “self-defense” as Jax later tries to justify to Chibs, Jax kills Jury. Eeek, you’re losing your grip, Teller.

Meanwhile, Abel needs to be picked up from school following him hitting another kid with a metal lunchbox – unprovoked (!) and giving him a gash. Abel’s teacher (played by Courtney Love) tries to explain the situation to Gemma (Katey Sagal) and recommends Abel see a therapist, though in classic Gemma fashion she just threatens her. When Gemma confronts Abel, the two have an interesting dialogue.

Gemma: “Do you understand what an accident is?”
Abel: “Do you?”

OH BOY. Looks like Abel isn’t letting his eavesdropping of Gemma’s confession go anytime soon. I really hope he’s the one to tell Jax the truth.

Later, at home, Gemma finds dead crows in her bed and Wendy (Drea de Matteo) discovers the words “No son is safe” etched on a wall in the children’s room.

In other news, Juice (Theo Rossi) wants protection in prison and lies about the circumstances of Tara’s murder. Unser (Dayton Callie) figures out Juice is in prison to kill Lin (Kenneth Choi), and Jarry (Annabeth Gish) wants to keep him on the police force even after this case.

Also, does Nero’s (Jimmy Smits) whole farm plan sound a lot like when Tara wanted to get out of Charming? Because that ended terribly each time she tried to do that, so I have a feeling it won’t work out well for Nero either…
