Pop-Ed: Best Movie Musicals

Moulin Rouge (2001)

Mallory Delchamp: As a former musical theatre college student, it is quite hard for me to narrow down my favorite movie musical. There are just so many to choose from! Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge!, however, is certainly in my personal top five. Imaginative, comedic, heartbreaking and a killer soundtrack to boot; Moulin Rouge! is the ideal musical film for those who may not enjoy classics such as Meet Me in St. Louis.

The 2001 musical dramedy tells the story of a bright-eyed writer named Christian (Ewan McGregor) who moves to Paris in search of just one thing, love. While in Paris, he meets a beautiful courtesan named Satine, who is the star of the Moulin Rouge night club. The two bohemians fall madly in love only to have their romance tragically ended.

The film contains very little original music and is instead filled with covers of various pop songs including Elton John’s “Your Song,” Sting’s “Roxanne” and Madonna’s “Like A Virgin.” Even though the film is a bit silly at times, Moulin Rouge! gives a visually stunning and wonderfully performed romance that is worth watching again and again.
