Les Miserables (2012)
David Oliver: I have a confession to make with this one: I saw the movie musical before I saw the play, which many would regard as a huge travesty. Arguably, it was, but that’s beside the point. This was a riveting movie, full of close-up shots of the actors in raw, emotional, musical moments. Anne Hathaway literally broke my heart and made me sob in the short screen time that was “I Dreamed A Dream.”
Russell Crowe was probably the weakest part of the movie, but honestly that didn’t really deter me from enjoying the film. The three hours pretty much flew by, as I was entranced in the story and wanted to see how it all shook out. Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen were quite funny and good comic relief during the more tragic parts. What I found most intriguing about it, though, was that romance wasn’t the movie’s true motivation, but that of redemption.
