Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Logan Fowler: Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been obsessed with Little Shop of Horrors. Firstly, the cast is superb. Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, John Candy, and Bill Murray all lend their comedic chops to Skid Row’s crew. Ellen Greene soprano chops lend very well to the leading lady as well. The ending is different from the stage version, but for Hollywood, I guess it has gotta be a happy ending. However, if you did check out the special edition Blu-Ray which came out a couple years ago, you’d see the much darker ending which totally lends itself to the word “horror.”

But as good as the cast is, the plant- crooning, pruning Audrey II (perfectly voiced by Levi Stubbs) is a spectacle to behold. No stage version could ever build a puppet as good as this film does. The ultimate bad guy of the movie, Audrey II moves superbly and looks amazing; he is a practical special effect that puts all CGI to shame. Director Frank Oz knew something about puppetry, being a man who worked with the Muppets for many years and it shows. Yes, the mean green mother from outer space is the real reason I truly adore Little Shop of Horrors. While the music is catchy, and the actors are great, the plant takes the bloody cake.
