7. Midnight Special

Director: Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud)
Midnight Special is one I would normally put in with the honorable mentions we don’t know enough about yet, but I’m amending that rule for this one. Jeff Nichols has stormed onto the movie scene with Take Shelter and 2013’s incredible Mud, which showed us all that Matthew McConaughey is actually a great actor. The idea of Nichols doing a Sci-Fi film has my attention. There isn’t much to go on right now other than this IMDB plot summary: “A father and son go on the run after the dad learns his child possesses special powers.” This sounds like a terrible young adult novel adaptation that opens in January, but in the hands of Jeff Nichols I’m excited. According to Wikipedia, Nichols also describes the film as “more grounded than Mud.” If that’s the case, I’m definitely intrigued as the word “grounded” in regards to Sci-Fi gives me a Chronicle vibe. Let’s also not forget that old Jeff Nichols staple Michael Shannon will be along for the ride. On pure talent and subject matter alone, this could easily be the best movie of the year.
