If this movie starred anybody else and didn’t have the typical Adam Sandler players involved such as Kevin James and co-writer Tim Herlihy, this film would probably be in my top three. The concept is absolutely ridiculous: Video Game characters such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong attack the world, so the President (James) employs the help of his childhood friend/1980’s video game champion (Sandler) and his pals to stop it using their old school gaming skills. That sounds like movie heaven. The problem is obviously that it’s written by what has been Adam Sandler’s right hand man (Herlihy) for years, and it involves Kevin James. It’s also directed by Chris Columbus who hasn’t exactly been hitting it out of the park lately. I was really torn on this one, but then I saw some of the teaser posters and was blown away. Let me just say this about Adam Sandler – I know he gets a bad rap, but at least he has multiple bonafide comedic classics on his resume. If you look at a lot of his recent outings, the problem hasn’t been with him, so much as the story ideas have been absolutely atrocious. I believe if you put him in a good project like this one, there’s legitimate hope. And despite the Kevin James factor (I hate Kevin James), the rest of the cast is pretty solid. There will be no middle ground with this film – it will either live up to the potential of its plot, or completely suck. I might be setting myself up for complete disappointment, but I have a good feeling about this one.
