27 Dresses (2008)
The Bride: Katherine Heigl
The Groom: James Marsden
The Bridal Party: Judy Greer, Ed Burns, Malin Akerman
27 Dresses is about a woman who embodies the saying “always a bridesmaid, never a bride.” Jane (Katherine Heigl) has served as bridesmaid 27 times but isn’t cynical about her own love life. She adores weddings and being a part of them until her younger sister Tess (Malin Ackerman) becomes engaged to the unrequited love of Jane’s life. Ultimately she finds herself, and love, through the harrowing experience of watching her younger sister get married before her.
This is an awesome wedding movie because the stereotypical perceptions of weddings are seen through each of the characters, specifically Jane, Kevin, and Tess. Weddings are romantic and fairytale like. Weddings are tragic mash-ups of friends, family, and alcohol. Weddings are shows and the chance to be in the spotlight. Throughout the movie the polar extremes Jane, Kevin, and Tess feel about weddings dissolve. By the end of the movie a wedding becomes just a party and the beginning to a new life, rather than the end all be all. –Marley Ghizzone
