Wedding Crashers (2005)
The Brides: Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher
The Grooms: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn
The Bridal Party: Bradley Cooper, Christopher Walken, Will Ferrell, Jane Seymour, Dwight Yoakam, Rebecca DeMornay
Having worked as a waiter at weddings for around five years, I think Wedding Crashers really nailed one of the most interesting things about weddings: Predictability. Everyone acts like their wedding is a unique snowflake but they are all so similar, it really is bizarre. You see the same characters giving the same speeches over and over again. Why wouldn’t a bunch of smart guys put everything together and start to wield that knowledge as a superpower?
Think about the moments early on in the film. They play like a heist movie. Wilson and Vaughn are using their experience with mechanical precision. They have a system with rules and plays. Wilson is able to predict all of the gifts and give Rachel McAdams the maid of honor speech advise that I wish I had seen more of. They really are very frequently a mess. Couple this opening with an exciting finale and a glorious Will Ferrell cameo that has forever changed the way I ask for meatloaf, and you have a movie that I will watch everytime I see it on TV (and that’s saying something). –Matthew Kelly
