Rock Grammys
Best Rock Performance
Nominees: “Gimme Something Good” – Ryan Adams, “Do I Wanna Know?” – Arctic Monkeys, “Blue Moon” – Beck, “Fever” – The Black Keys, “Lazaretto” – Jack White
Al Mannarino: Most competitive category of the year? It very well could be. With names like Jack White, The Black Keys, and Arctic Monkeys you would think it would be for album of the year, but unfortunately these names didn’t make the cut. Honestly any one of these songs could win and I would be happy. ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ is still one of the catchiest songs I have ever heard, but I can see Jack White winning for ‘Lazaretto.’
Bill Bodkin: This is tough. I’m going with Jack White – the Grammys love him and that song was beast.
Best Metal Performance
Nominees: “Neon Knights” – Anthrax, “High Road” – Mastodon, “Heartbreaker” – Motörhead, “The Negative One” – Slipknot, “The Last In Line” – Tenacious D
Lisa Pikaard: I think I am going to have to give this one to “The Negative One.” This is their first single since the death of their bassist back in 2010 and the song has been played non-stop since its release.
Bill Bodkin: This is always a weird category and so many times covers win. So I’d love it if Anthrax wins, however I see Slipknot taking this one.
Best Rock Song
“Ain’t It Fun” Hayley Williams & Taylor York, songwriters (Paramore)
“Blue Moon” Beck Hansen, songwriter (Beck)
“Fever” Dan Auerbach, Patrick Carney & Brian Burton, songwriters (The Black Keys)
“Gimme Something Good” Ryan Adams, songwriter (Ryan Adams)
“Lazaretto” Jack White, songwriter (Jack White)
Lisa Pikaard: Best Rock Song will have to go to “Gimme Something Good.” This song has such a classic rock feel that its appeal is for the modern rock and classic rock fans alike. The bluesy guitar swings and hits at all the right moments.
Al Mannarino: Surprisingly Paramore wasn’t nominated for more awards after the year they had. They could probably win this category, but it’s another tough call. Jack White’s Lazaretto has sold more vinyl’s then any other album in the last 20 years, and The Black Keys are one of the biggest live acts in music. This could be anyone’s category.
Bill Bodkin: This is where The Black Keys win. I think “Fever” and “Lazaretto” are going to split the voters so each will take home a Grammy.
Best Rock Album
Nominees: Ryan Adams – Ryan Adams, Morning Phase – Beck, Turn Blue – The Black Keys, Hypnotic Eye – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Songs of Innocence – U2
Lisa Pikaard: Songs of Innocence automatically downloading onto my itunes has pissed me off so much that I do not EVER want to listen to a U2 song again. Their free download idea, in theory, was brilliant. In practice, the idea was just awful. Give me a choice for God’s sake! Best Rock Album should go to Hypnotic Eye by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Al Mannarino: I’m going to go out on a limb and say that U2 is not winning any awards for Songs of Innocence. The backlash from iTunes users ruined any chance for U2 to come how with any awards. Surprisingly no nomination for Lazaretto in this category, but it’s nice to see a nomination for Tom Petty.
Bill Bodkin: Fever wins here. As much as people love Petty, the fact it’s the Black Keys make this an automatic win.
Alternative
Nominees: This Is All Yours – alt-J, Reflektor – Arcade Fire, Melophobia – Cage the Elephant, St. Vincent – St. Vincent, Lazaretto – Jack White
Al Mannarino: Best Alternative Music Album is easily my favorite category of the night. This is where I get to see some of my favorite bands get the credit they deserve. Arcade Fire, Cage The Elephant, St. Vincent, and Jack White all deserve to win, but I really want to see Alt-J win an award. Mostly because they are weird and I want to see what crazy shit they would say in their acceptance speech.
Bill Bodkin: Easily going to St. Vincent. She’s beloved, so was the record.
