A Cinderella Story (2004)
“Waiting for you is like waiting for water in this drought, useless and disappointing,” Sam tells a half dressed Austin after storming into the boys locker room (scandalous) before the big football game. Austin becomes emotional, but obviously tries to hide it due to his bros being around.
A Cinderella Story, starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, is my favorite guilty pleasure romantic comedy. I unabashedly love romantic comedies and I wouldn’t say I am embarrassed of loving this movie but I understand that I should be.
The movie is very heavy-handed. For example, Austin (Murray) wants to be a writer but can’t stand up to his loud father who wants him to run the car wash and play football, like a man. Austin is a jock but underneath a real sensitive soul, okay?
Another issue I might have with this movie (if I was a hater) would be with Sam (Duff.) She is supposed to be poor and destitute and struggling. However, she has a computer, a cell phone, and drives a Ford Mustang. Where is she getting all this? Especially if she’s saving for Princeton? I’m not saying she’s living pretty or anything, she is still lacking motherly compassion and love, but she’s not exactly wearing rags.
But if you can get over some weird plot holes and over the top characterizations this movie is gold. Austin is obviously cute, adorable, and everything you want in a sensitive jock. Sam is sweet and pretty even though she totally doesn’t know it because of her years of mental abuse, giving her an air of humility.
The movie wraps up exactly how you would hope a romantic comedy would end. Austin stands up to his father by quitting halfway through the big game to KISS Sam and then it RAINS which brings everything full circle. They get to go to Princeton together and the evil step mother loses everything. The good people win and are happy and the bad people get nothing, just like life.
I would like to thank ABC Family for their constant movie marathons which affords me the chance to watch this movie way more than necessary. A Cinderella Story was part of my childhood and probably one of my earliest forays into the land of romantic comedies. –Marley Ghizzone
