6. Number 5 (Short Circuit)
Don’t even pretend like you weren’t expecting this one. It’s funny, because when I watch the trailers for Chappie, there is no way in hell you can convince me Neill Blomkamp did not love Short Circuit. Look at the design of both robots for crying out loud! Chappie looks like a serious version of Short Circuit. This is one awkward movie, especially Ally Sheedy’s performance (her character is totally an animal hoarder). This is all about Number 5 though, who’s “ALIIIIVE!” It’s funny how this is supposed to be some advanced war machine, but really it looks like a slightly upgraded 1985 Nintendo. Number 5 is very much like WALL-E in that he wants to learn more about the world, or “input” as he puts it. I’m not going to sit here and tell you Short Circuit is a movie of brilliance, but it’s definitely something that should be seen at least once – it’s classic 80’s.
P.S. Fisher Stevens is hilarious in this movie. Steve Guttenberg is not.
