Pocahontas – Megan LaBruna
Growing up in the 90’s in a house with three girls meant there was almost always a Disney movie playing. Of all the movies that have yet to be made into a life action film or play, I would love to see Pocahontas come to life! I can still remember every verse to “Colors of the Wind” and admit that I’m totally jealous I don’t have a grandmother willow tree in my backyard to provide me with sage advice.
Despite the obvious lack of historical accuracy, the movie makes up for it by having a stellar soundtrack. Besides, everyone knows Disney is all about the magic of make believe and following your dreams, so who cares that Pocahontas didn’t really have a pet raccoon named Meeko or fall in love with John Smith.
Pocahontas loved nature, so imagine how beautiful and elaborate the sets would be on a Broadway stage or a movie set, if they could truly film in a natural setting.
But, I think the true magic of a live action film for Pocahontas lies in its songs. Imagine how powerful “Steady As The Beating Drum” would sound if sung by an entire ensemble. Or how amazing “Just Around The Riverbend” would come across if it were actually performed outside near real rushing water and large billowing trees.
Hopefully someone will realize what a fantastic idea it is to make Pocahontas into an actual film or play, so that I can go watch one of my favorite films truly come to life…and I promise not to sing during the show, well at least not too loud!
