Al Manarinno – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
At this point, Netflix is just gloating. After delivering great original programing with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, and resurrecting cult classics like Arrested Development and the upcoming Wet Hot American Summer prequel, the streaming service is now partnering up with Marvel to supply the world with five gritty superhero shows. Best of all, Netflix managed to steal Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock) away from network television to develop Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Ellie Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids) stars as Kimmy, one of four women recently rescued from a doomsday cult who decides to start her life and catch up on the last fifteen years. Along the way she moves in with an aspiring, but struggling actor named Titus Andromedan (Tituss Burgess) and gets a job working as a babysitter for Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski), a delusional billionaire’s wife. While trying to experience everything she missed out on, Kimmy gains new friends, falls in and out of love, and tries to put her terrible past behind her.
Leave it to Tina Fey to take such dark subject matter and add her own brand of surreal self-aware comedy to it. Not only do the writers get to reference early 90’s pop culture and poke fun at how ridiculous things have gotten (selfies, viral videos, etc.). The series is both a time capsule to a bygone era and a reminder that times really have changed. But nostalgia isn’t the only reason to boot up your streaming device, sign in to Netflix, and binge Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Kimmy Schmidt is a perfect example of when a comedy is firing on all cylinders. Even if you aren’t a fan of 30 Rock, Ellie Kemper and her aggressive optimism will instantly charm you. There’s not one weak spot in the entire supporting cast, and the array of cameos and guest stars are sure to keep you entertained.
