Kurt Sutter’s news series The Bastard Executioner Gets 10 Episode Order For FX Fall Schedule
FX has given a ten-episode order to The Bastard Executioner, a drama series set during the Middle Ages from Kurt Sutter, creator of The Shield and Sons of Anarchy. The series, which starts production this summer, will air its first season in the fall.
The period drama tells the story of a warrior knight working under King Edward I who decides to leave war behind and put down his sword. But it’s not long before his violent past catches up to him and he’s forced, as per FX’s description, “to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.”
“I love history. I love theology. I love blood,” said Sutter in a statement released by the network. “I love working with FX… they not only tolerate me, they embrace my extremely disturbing storytelling sensibilities.” If the show is anything like Sutter’s last FX original, it will certainly be filled with graphic violence and constant tension.
The cast for The Bastard Executioner includes relative newcomer Lee Jones, Stephen Moyer of True Blood fame, and Danny Sapani (Penny Dreadful). It will also include Sutter in a leading role, as well as his wife, Katey Sagal, who won a Golden Globe for her work as Gemma in Sons of Anarchy. Matthew Rhys of fellow FX series The Americans will guest star.
