DJ Chapman – Mr. Robot
Summer is always a shaky time for television. Most of the largely popular television shows like Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, and The Flash are on break, leaving many to wonder “What am I supposed to watch?” The clear answer is Mr. Robot which may be one of the best shows on television right now.
What makes Mr. Robot so entertaining is the show’s ability to keep you on edge for most of an episode focusing centrally around the main character, Elliot. While more and more shows try to incorporate multiple interesting characters into a show (Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, etc.), Mr. Robot takes the approach of taking place mostly inside the head of Elliot. The show sort of feels like Fight Club where we are hearing more of the main character’s inner thoughts. It is fun to be able to roam around inside our protagonist’s head and allow us to see the inner workings of the white-hat hacker working for good.
Mr. Robot is very good at keeping a really nice pace during the show. One of the best things about the show is that, despite being mostly about computer hackers, the actual complicated parts of hacking are kept to a minimum. While this seems like it might be a detriment to not have a lot of hacking in a show about a hacker, this allows it keep up the pace and not lose people in the minutia of computer hacking. When the hacking does take place it is pretty fast paced so it keeps you interested even if you don’t have a vast knowledge of the computer world. My advice is just Google “DDoS” before the show and you’ll be fine. The consequences that surround the hacking in this show is what keeps it really interesting too. Seeing Elliot have to struggle in a world he hates and doesn’t understand, juxtapose to wanting to keep his friends safe, is an interesting paradigm. Flawed characters are always more interesting and Rami Malek really helps Elliot’s character come to life.
Even though it has only been two episodes Mr. Robot seems like the show of the summer. The cliffhangers and suspense keep the show interesting, along with Elliot’s character development, which is very unique. While most shows use charismatic characters to carry the show, Mr. Robot uses a quiet genius who struggles in the world he has been placed in. Nevertheless, Elliot’s skill at hacking, and sometimes blackmailing, makes Mr. Robot a really fun experience and has you root for such a flawed character in a great way.
I would recommend that everyone watch the pilot episode for Mr. Robot right now. It really is an intriguing show. While it’s usually hard to sell the show that is based around computers and technology, it takes the focus off of that and focuses around Elliot and his struggle. I have a feeling that Mr. Robot is going to be the show of the summer, and a must see.
