David Oliver – UnREAL
UnREAL is everything one could want in a summer show: it’s a scripted soap opera about the reality soap opera that The Bachelor often evolves into. Its appearance on Lifetime alone had me rolling my eyes – why would I want to watch a Lifetime series? But this goes to show you can’t judge a show by its channel. Its take on what happens behind the scenes of a The Bachelor -like series called “Everlasting” and is all at once captivating, ridiculous, smart, and frothy.
I’m not an avid viewer of the franchise, but know enough that the drama always seems to creep in to keep fans in check. What UnREAL’s meta-concept does is break the rules between fiction and reality through unexpected twists and turns. And it doesn’t shy away from questioning who to root for, either. Everything’s a little gray, and that’s the “REAL” way to write a series.
