7. Chewbacca – Bill Bodkin
Why I Ranked the Character so High:Â Chewbacca is like grilled cheese of the Star Wars saga (if the Star Wars saga was lunch) — he’s consistently good, enjoyable, and puts a smile on your face. Chewbacca, even in his terrible prequels cameo, was a fun character to watch. He’s such an imposing figure but he’s just the most genial sidekick possible. He’s the kind of character that you wanna scratch behind the ear, and back you up in a bar fight at the same time. He’s a great foil for Han Solo — he’s his conscience, usually airing on the side of what’s right and just — despite being an outlaw himself.
Favorite Line:Â The famed ‘Wookie Hoth moan.’ Â In Empire Strikes Back, Han and Chewie are outdoors in the midst of an absurd ice and snow storm. Chewie at one point ends up popping his head up from a snow bank, his hair being blown about ferociously, and he just looks at Han and roars as if to say, “What the hell are we dong here, man?!”
Quintessential Saga Moment:Â Literally anytime Han Solo makes a decision that goes against Chewie’s moral compass. Let’s face Chewbacca only communicates through random roars and growls, but somehow everyone (but us) understands him. The fact Han understands all too well, and we find out how much Chewie is conveying through one simple bellow is pretty awesome.
6. R2-D2 – Logan J. Fowler
Why I Ranked the Character so High: R2-D2 man, I just dig that little robot. If I had been born earlier, I’m sure my adoration for the guy would have pretty much how I feel about BB-8 now (Note: I’m totally fascinated by The Force Awakens orange and white droid. Kind of disturbing actually). He doesn’t say much, but his actions speak so much louder than words. Plus, he’s adorable, sassy, and is completely blunt with his sidekick C-3PO. Plus, he has gotten his pals out of some really tight spots and is completely loyal to the rebellion.
Favorite Line: Like I said before, R2-D2 is not very verbal, but when he and C-3PO reunite in Empire Strikes Back, C-3PO (who is in pieces) cries, “Look what happened to me!” R2-D2 lets out a “oh no” with only boops and beeps. It gets me every time.
Quintessential Saga Moment: There’s an all out war on Endor in Return of the Jedi near the end of the film, and R2 uses his tools to try to break into the shield generator bunker on the planet. It needs to destroyed so the rebellion fleet can take out the second Death Star and defeat the Empire. The little droid gets shot in the process and ultimately doesn’t get to open the doors, but his heroism shines through. He even has a comedic moment due to his suffering. The guy is just pure gold.
