HAN SOLO
Daniel Cohen: Out of all the original characters, Han Solo seems to have the biggest role out of everyone. He’s been all over the marketing. While there’s still much we don’t know about The Force Awakens, it’s clear Han is serving as the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the movie. He’s the one flying these newbies into a Galaxy far, far away. Let’s also not forget that Harrison Ford isn’t getting any younger.
With us getting a heavy dose of Han Solo in this film, the stars feel aligned for him to die a noble death by the end. If Han doesn’t make it, I don’t see Chewbacca living past The Force Awakens without Han, although I could see a scenario where Chewbacca sacrifices himself for him. Either way, their deaths will be the powerful moment of this film that everyone will talk about. We also have a Han Solo prequel in the works, so that’s another avenue to give people their Han fix.
I have an image in my head of Han and Chewie going out in a blaze of glory in the Millennium Falcon.
Prediction: Dies
Luke Kalamar: I don’t want this to happen. I love Han Solo. Yet out of all the original characters, his death seems the most likely. His constant presence in the trailers and posters actually gives credence to this. Abrams is notoriously secretive about this movie, going so far as to only give a single shot of Luke Skywalker, so you know every scene shown so far was a very calculated decision. This is also why I don’t believe Finn is actually a Jedi, but that’s another discussion. Compared to Luke and Leia, Han has received significantly more pre-air presence, and at this point, you have to wonder why. Is it because Abrams simply chose Han to be our primary connecter to the original films, or is it because our favorite scoundrel will die, and we’re getting as much material with him as we can before it happens? It also doesn’t help that there’s no news of Han appearing in Episode VIII.
A certain scene shown in the trailer and many TV spots might even show Han’s death too. In a moment that really stood out, Rey is sobbing in a snowy forest. The forest looks exactly like the place Finn duels Kylo Ren. Rey is crying over a body wearing a brown looking jacket, and while Finn is wearing a similarly styled one in his battle, we already know John Boyega is in the next movie. Killing the obvious new protagonist so early would be insane too. So who else could it be? People think it’s Han since he’s also wearing a brown-ish jacket. Plus, if the theory of Rey being his daughter pans out, it makes her deluge of tears perfectly reasonable. I’m sure everyone else will have the same reaction too.
Prediction: Dies
Aaron Sarnecky: Han Solo started out as an “every man for himself” kind of character but since his debut we’ve seen Han grow quite a bit. Despite that, he’s still the suave smuggler we all know and love. It seems we’ll see even more change in Han Solo in The Force Awakens. His adventures with Luke have made him a believer in the Force, something he once blew off as part of a hokey religion. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sacrificed himself for a greater cause. Harrison Ford actually wanted this to happen in Return of the Jedi, since he thought it would give the film more of an emotional impact, but Lucas vetoed him.
Harrison Ford returning to do a fifth Indiana Jones movie is another reason he could perish. He’s considerably older than his co-stars from the original films and he might not have that much left in the tank. Face it. Getting older happens.
Prediction: Dies
