‘Via Negativa’
(Season 8, Episode 7)
While Scully is away on leave for personal matters, Newly brought on Agent Dogged and Walter Skinner take on a religious cult leader who is believed to murder victims in their sleep. When they come to close, the agents begin to have homicidal dreams.
Why it’s worth watching: By the eighth season, the show was in the homestretch and made some bold yet questionable choices. Mulder was abducted by aliens and was missing for a good chunk of the episodes and Scully had a largely unexplained pregnancy and was away as well. One good choice was bringing in Agent Dogged (Robert Patrick), who had a different presence than Duchovny. Some considered that off putting while I saw it as a fresh reset. This episode in particular is one of the strong Dogged episodes where it is very bizarre. The atmosphere of the episode is very doom-y and just eerie. It also contains its usual top notch dialogue and comic relief. Definitely worth checking out.
