5. Iron Man (2008) (Tommy Tracy)
Why I Love It: Let’s take a trip back to 2008, shall we? We had some damn good superhero flicks that came previously, thanks to the brilliant minds of Christopher Nolan, Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi. Sadly, we also had some duds that included an emo Superman, a Galactus cloud and a Razzie-Award winning Halle Berry dressed as a cat. Yet every comic book reader one day dreamed of a day where we would see the super groups on the big screen. The Avengers and the Justice League! It had to happen one day. And with one single film the seeds were planted thanks to a return of Robert Downey, Jr. and a gem written and directed by Jon Favreau. Enter Iron Man.
Iron Man is one of the best superhero films of all time for a variety of reasons: fast-paced writing, excellent acting, seamless effects and a smart story that takes comic information and fits them perfectly onto the big screen. Downey was MADE to play Tony Stark, a womanizing alcoholic, which may have hit home a little too close. His wit was electric, sucking you in immediately from the very first line he speaks.
I’m a HUGE comic book fan. And the fact that Iron Man was announced made me feel, well, bored actually. I just didn’t care. Even the trailer looked subpar. Alas, I still lined up for the first screening, awaiting a movie that was definitely going to suck. And what I got was phenomenal, something special and something that I can still call the best Marvel movie ever made, even eight years later. Iron Man was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film and it still stands as the best.
Favorite Line: How do you pick just one? So many incredible one-liners, some that I still quote to this day. But the best has to be the last, when Tony confidently says, “I Am Iron Man”.
Favorite Scene: The moment Tony returns to his captors in his Mark II armor and blasts the camp to smithereens.
