4. Guardians of the Galaxy (Michael Dworkis)
Why I Love It: Superhero movies are typically fun, but as of late there has been a slide towards a more serious tone. Sure, we have some big bad guys looming over the horizon, so our heroes naturally need to become grittier. Look at the upcoming Civil War movie. Heroes vs. Heroes. This is why Guardians of the Galaxy is such a great movie. Like ScreenJunkies said in their Honest Trailer, “it’s Avengers, but in space.” The Avengers movie was awesome, but Guardians knocked it out of the park.
The characters can accept working with aliens more naturally than anyone on Earth, who remain skeptical and reflexively hostile. The Guardians lineup include a human, a one-line talking tree, a raccoon, a green skinned killer, and Batista. The sheer absurdity of the predicaments they get into is their reality. This is their life. Of course there is a serious side of the film in which the story of Thanos progresses, but it is within this less tense approach which allows audiences to literally enjoy the ride through the galaxy.
Avengers I can watch a few times. Guardians I can watch without limit. It’s just fun. You smile, you laugh. The adventure is intoxicating and you just want to go on the ride over and over.
Favorite Line:
Rocket Raccoon: (Explaining Drax to Peter Quill) “His people are completely literal. Metaphors go over his head.”
Drax: “Nothing goes over my head…My reflexes are too fast, I would catch it.”
Favorite Scene: What better example than Peter Quill challenging Ronin the Accuser to a dance-off, to which said villain is completely thrown off guard with the rest of the viewing audience.
