It’s just like Toy Story…but with junk food and drug use
Seth Rogen’s debut into animation is a stoner’s munchie fueled fantasy turned hilariously dark nightmare. Set for wide release on August 12th this year, Sausage Party already had a pre-screening at this year’s SXSW and received an uproar of laughs and positive reception, despite unpolished animation still in the works. It’s no Anomalisa but the film’s charm lies in the brilliantly simple plot.
Star-crossed lovers, Frank (Seth Rogen) a grocery store packaged hot dog and his girlfriend bun, Brenda (Kristen Wiig), along with a retinue of other anthropomorphic food, discover their gruesome existential fate: to be taken home and eaten by customers. What will surely ensue is a vulgar, sexual innuendo, reefer filled quest to save themselves and the rest of the grocery store.
Sporting an impressive cast from the typical Rogen entourage to Edward Norton, along with the recent rise in popularity of adult animation, such as Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, Comedy Central’s TripTank, and ADHD’s move from Fox to FX, Sausage Party could not have come at a better time.
The film is written by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, of This is the End, Superbad, and Pineapple Express infamy.
Sausage Party to be August 12th, 2016.
