Match Game Reboot ‘Matches’ the Fun and Excitement of the Original

The only thing I need to complete my Sunday TV game night is The Price Is Right – since ABC has rebooted Family Feud, $100,000 Pyramid and Match Game, all the shows that I’ve watched (albeit reruns) growing up.

Hearing the opening music of Match Game and seeing new host Alec Baldwin holding a skinny microphone brought a smile to my face. Although he is not kissing everyone on the set, ala Richard Dawson, he does have a rapport with the contestants and the celebrities that is undeniably electric.

Continuing in the theme of tonight’s game shows getting a 2016-twist, the first question asked what an adults-only section of Costco would offer. Though most of the cast wrote down lube, J.B. Smoove answered samples of sex, much to the confusion of the rest of the panel. However, it was good for typical, shocking, 1990s-teen sitcom “ooohs.” Another question was about Mick Jagger writing a commercial for Viagra because he can’t get no small erection.

What’s great about this show is not only the answers, which sometimes are reminiscent of Cards Against Humanity, but the banter between the celebrity guests. They don’t let any terrible or stupid answer slide, they rank on each other and they certainly share the same warped, dirty minds when it comes to filling in the blanks. Rosie O’Donnell is definitely the standout on the panel, though J.B. Smoove and Debra Messing are very entertaining with their ridiculous answers, or lack thereof.

I’m not quite sure why so many topics centered on Donald Trump and especially Rosie O’Donnell’s disdain for him, but other than that, the show is a hit and ABC’s Fun & Games night is a complete success!
