Last season left us with Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Ben’s awkward engagement, Colette (Fortune Feimster) left Karen (Tipper Newton) at their engagement party, Morgan and Tamra were still exes and very much single, and the new doctor, Ana, and Jeremy kindled up another relationship on the show.
Tuesday night’s premiere, directed by David Stassen, starts eight months later with Mindy still unexcited about her fiancé (Bryan Greenberg) and spending much of the episode getting out of date nights and back into her coworkers’ affairs.
The first affair involves managing Tamra’s request to have a baby on her own so she can follow through with her idea of another her. Tamra (Xosha Roquemore) feels apprehensive towards the hormone injections until Morgan (Ike Barinholtz), her supportive friend who still has lingering feelings for her and who is coincidentally the hormone injection teacher of Tamra’s class, helps her go through with them.
Next, newly single Ana (Rebecca Rittenhouse) approaches Mindy about her fear of missing out on the dating scene after Jeremey proposes that they move in together. Even after Mindy shares about her bad past relationships, Ana decides to break up with Jeremy. The last fire that Mindy helps put out involves Mindy joining Jeremy (Ed Weeks) and Jody (Garrett Dillahunt) in getting Karen rehired after Karen’s petty act leads Colette to petition for her to be let go.
The episode concludes with Ben confronting Mindy after she spends two nights unaware that Ben wasn’t in the house. Mindy admits that she’s having a hard time adjusting to living with another adult again and promises to change. But, does she mean it? The very last scene catches Mindy slipping into her old habits.
