I never thought I would read a tale which portrays Optimus Prime as a struggling leader, put in the position of constant backpeddling and second-guessing. This is not the Optimus Prime I knew and loved.
Since the formation of this IDW/Hasbro Universe, Optimus Prime has been in this indescribable limbo between being a leader, and being nothing more than a titleholder. This spiral towards what by now many readers know to be an ultimate end, does not favors for ol’ Prime as those close to him are dying, his followers feeling betrayed, and the culmination of everything that goes wrong in this issue hits a tragic spike in the final page of the issue.
The artwork does well to compliment a feeling of rush, turmoil, impeding chaos. Scene after scene unfolds, and you can feel the progression to a major event approaching.
As Optimus realizes through the issue, things are not as they seem, and an ultimate sinister plot continue to fully unfold.
With Unicron #0 hitting on Free Comic Book Day, it seems hope is lost and extinction may not be so far away as it seems.
Optimus Prime #17 gets a 9 out of 10.
That last page. The page alone gets a 10 of 10.
