There will be spoilers from Issues #1 and #2 in this review. Please wait to read this review if you’re behind.
At the end of Issue #2 Willa had snuck into a party. She was able to meet with Roger Barrow. Unfortunately it was revealed to the reader that Roger isn’t the good guy savior the world believes him to be. But, he did work with Nate in the past. That much is true.
This issue picks up with Willa and Roger talking about her father, Nate. Willa explains to him that Nate has been holed-up in their apartment for a long time. That she thinks he’s gone mad. Willa believes that seeing an old friend may snap him out of his madness. And, she mentions that that her dad claims he can fix the gravity on earth. Roger is fully confident that Nate has the intelligence to fix everything.
This is where it becomes evident to Willa that Roger isn’t safe to be around. Mild spoiler, but I think most readers know where this was headed: Roger does something terrible to Willa. I won’t fully explain, but I will tell you that he wants to know where Nate is. And, Roger will do anything to Willa for the answer. She barely escapes.
As Willa is trying to evade capture she notices a familiar face in a nearby hallway. Her friend Joan does work cleaning different places, and luckily today was Laundry pick-up. Willa hops in with the dirty laundry and Joan does her best to protect Willa. Joan gives Willa a tour more or less of the building. We also learn how elevators work now. You don’t want to miss that.
Joan does her best to keep an ear out to see if there’s security ahead. And, she does her best to avoid them. But, can Joan really keep this up in a heavily secured building? Will Roger figure out where Nate is? Is Willa going to be safe? Pick up this issue to learn all these exciting answers.
Something I liked a lot about this issue is that we got some more information on so many characters. We learn more about Joan, Edison, Nate, and of course Roger. I didn’t want to spoil anything by saying so, but the character development is great, and the plot is tying things up nicely. Another thing I really liked about this issue is that I was excited to see if Willa would be able to get away from Roger. The things Joan and Willa go through in this issue are pretty intense.
I love that little things you take for granted on a planet that has gravity is touched on in every issue. This issue explained a few more things I had questioned previously in that regard. Sure, Skyward creates a fun world where you can fly, but it also creates an interesting world where people have to totally adapt in order to survive.
