The Aquaman trailer was undoubtedly the most anticipated trailer of the entire San Diego Comic Con.
On Saturday it was finally unveiled to audience thirsty for the first solo, big screen adventure of Arthur Curry aka Aquaman.
The trailer will undoubtedly split audiences. It’s easily the DCEU’s most “Marvel” trailer. The tone, the pacing, the world building, the humor, and emphasis on big action scream Marvel.
Is this a bad thing though?
As we said in our Shazam! thoughts, the DCEU has tended to lean towards to the serious and straightforward. And if we’re being honest with ourselves for second — they needed to.
There’s never really been a whole lot of room for levity in the world of Batman, outside of LEGO Batman obviously.
Man of Steel was built upon the premise of the end of the world.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was about the clash of the two biggest superheroes ever.
Wonder Woman was billed an epic introduction of an iconic character.
Justice League and Suicide Squad…well those were something else.
However, from the jump, we’ve seen Aquaman as more of a “fun” character. He’s a wild card, a bad ass — someone prone for a pun and a punch to the mouth.
So, it makes sense that this character would have more of a Marvel feel to its first trailer ever. Aquaman, while a legendary comic book hero, is in no way as iconic as Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. So, like Wonder Woman, we’re going to need a ton of world building, and that’s what this trailer gave us.
The special effects in this trailer are very spotty. The aquarium sequence is really subpar — reminiscent of those awful effects from the beach battle in Wonder Woman. However, when we get to Atlantis, we see some brilliant set pieces. The kingdom is glorious, and the creatures we’re briefly introduced to are incredible looking.
We do get to see a glimpse of some of the stellar cast — Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Blank Manta. However, while we see all these elite performers — the dialogue clunks hard, especially when Heard and Momoa are on screen together. Should we worry? Probably not, remember how bad Aquaman’s dialogue in the Justice League trailer were? Then remember how good he was in that movie?
So, in the end, this trailer is going to be divisive as hell. What’d you guys think?
