Review: Optimus Prime #23

If things weren’t bad enough for Team Prime, it gets worse. Much worse. The arrival of a junior squad of Autobots turns ugly and Transformers take on Transformers with fatal results.

The issue served more of a bridge to events taking place in the pages of Unicron. The focus on a rogue band of Autobots/Cybertronians didn’t really move the plot forward, but it did show a major flaw within the Cybertronian ranks, something constantly hinted to throughout the series. A lack of unity. Unity which only seems to happen when a big bad disaster is about to strike.

Going back to a few years ago, we had the Chaos story arc, then Dark Cybertron, which both altered our perception of Transformers. It also showed us an underlying theme which is now evident. Transformers, like humans, are flawed. We fight, bicker, complain, become self-absorbed, seek out only what is best for us. Sabotage, self-sacrifice, all of the above. Optimus Prime is a leader, but not the same from our childhood. The Transformers, while powerful giant robots, are also conflicted and complex individuals as well.

The end is near, and Cybertron is… Well, you’ll just have to find out in my review in Unicron #4.

Optimus Prime #23 gets an 8 out of 10
