‘The Bridge’ Was Certainly Over Troubled Waters on The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 2

‘The Bridge’ begins a month later after the premiere episode, and we see Rick (Andrew Lincoln) talking to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who’s still in his, about the day they had. Yes, it was one of those typical, slow episodes of The Walking Dead. However, luckily, there were several situations at the construction site for the bridge that made things interesting, and a little gory.

The first situation was at the bridge site, between a savior, named Justin (Zach MacGowen – Black Sails, Agents of Shield), and Darryl (Norman Reedus). Justin was offered a drink of water by Henry (Macsen Lintz), but insisted on having more than what he was allowed. As he was going to make things worse, Darryl stepped in and fought him. The fight was broken up, and they all went back to work. Sadly, same ol’ Walking Dead drama.

The best segment from tonight’s episode was when a heard of walkers showed up to the site. A malfunctioning walkie talkie didn’t relay the message to sound off a blast to distract the walkers from the site. Aaron (Ross Marquand), Darryl, and a few others were hauling logs together, but as the walkers came, they had to abandon the site ASAP. As the people on top of the logs left the site, a log crushed Aaron’s arm.

As the log was lifted, it’s revealed that Arron’s arm was in bad shape  — blood is literally everywhere, and there’s a bone sticking out of his flesh. We’re briefly distracted from this horror when Rick and the others show up to kill the walkers at the site. Rick shoots a rope that was used to bundle a collection of logs smashing a majority of the walkers in a fairly fun moment.

Back to reality however as Aaron’s arm ends up getting amputated. To complicate things the person that had the faulty walkie talkie was Justin. Of course Darryl thinks this was an act of a sabotage instead of an accident. Tensions ran high which led to Rick and Darryl having arguing over how things are. Rick told Justin to head back to The Sanctuary so there won’t be anymore situations between him and others at the worksite.

As Rick was finishing up his story, Negan was egging him on saying that Rick’s new world is just a monument for the dead, and they [The Saviors] are getting this new world ready for him.

This episode was definitely more entertaining than the slower paced premiere. There was the great walker scene at the lumber site. Plus there’s some interesting character development including a new romance between Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) and the trash lady Anne (Pollyana McIntosh). Oh and, Carol decided to wear the ring that Ezekiel had for her.

The second to last scene the episode brought back the mysterious helicopter. I really hope we figure out who’s flying that helicopter soon. Before the credits rolled, we had what I can be interpreted as an homage of a Friday the 13th / Sleepaway Camp scene. Justin was walking back to The Sanctuary, when someone comes out of the bushes (we don’t see who it is since it’s a POV shot) and Justin has his “Oh it’s you/What are you doing” moment before being grabbed out of frame. Wonder if we’ll find out next week who did it, or if it will be just an episode of the group pointing fingers and causing yet more tension upon one another.
