Review: Unicron #5

I’m running out of doom-saying cliches. Feels just a bit like the end is being dragged out a bit, but this is the next-to-final issue of the Unicron arc.

An assault is planned while factions come together, Transfomers, G.I. Joe, ROM, and others ready for what is deemed as the final assault on Unicron.

Antagonists from First Strike and Revolution are brought in to call back how we got to this point. There are specific points made from characters Joe Colton, Destro, and others. ROM takes a bigger stance, and I wonder if this will lead to something for him in the final issue.

Seems odd out of all the other properties, ROM has been featured the most while G.I. Joe seems to have taken a backseat. It’s a somber tone for this issue, and rightfully so. The death toll, either by villainous or by the recent tragic events of civil unrest, has paved the way for ending the series on a dark note. Of course, this means something glorious may happen to redeem all parties, but I do not have my hopes up.  Unicron means death, and this is the issue where they might as well start sitting Shiva.

Even Visionaries have been tossed to the backseat for an occasional appearance. I’m reading with a bit of trepidation. Maybe IDW has something crazy planned which eliminates the Transformers while the other properties introduced in Revolution and First Strike are the inheritors of Cybertronian heritage.

It’s been firmly established ROM, MASK, Micronauts, and the others have Cybertronian origins. It’s still a bit weird to me, but somehow IDW made sense of it all. This is the issue where all roads point to one final all-out assault on Unicron, despite a Decepticon invasion decimating areas of the United States and of course, it wouldn’t be a Transformers comic without treachery and deceit among the Decepticons. It’s pretty much a staple of every series. Bad guys turn on bad guys to become badder bad guys.

Unicron #5 is a good set up, the cliche of calm before the storm comes to mind. Speaking of minds, keep in mind, Unicron #6 is not the death-knell for the Transformers saga, but the final issue will be Optimus Prime #25. I’m expecting a eulogy.

Oh, and don’t forget about Stardrive. The Transformer/Solstar Knight/Dire Wraith/and Primus-knows-what-else hybrid which combines all of Hasbro’s properties together.

Unicron #5 gets an 8 out of 10.

Unicron #5 is now available at comic book retailers everywhere.
