Josh Sarnecky (Staff Writer): After the events of Infinity War, fan reaction could largely be summed up as shock and skepticism. That is, shock that the MCU would kill off half of its roster and skepticism that those deaths would stick. Which, for many, raised the question of what the point is if most (if not all) of our beloved characters come back to life.
The trailer for Avengers: Endgame is the perfect response to that line of thought. The greatest impact of Thanos’ snap is the toll it has taken on the remaining heroes. The futility and impending doom expressed by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers’s (Chris Evan) utter desperation and sense of defeat show these characters at their very lowest.
The stakes are no longer intergalactic — they are personal and existential. Endgame promises not only to challenge the Avengers’ strength but also their identities. With Iron Man’s arrogant determination and Captain America’s optimistic refusal to give up fading away, the quest to avenge and potentially resurrect their loved ones is ultimately going to validate or destroy their defining traits.
While the trailer offers little in the way of plot, our first glimpse at the film flawlessly captures its tone. As explosive as this movie is sure to be, the trailer promises that Endgame will also be a deeply emotional movie. And that aspect has me more excited than anything else. However Endgame unfolds, April cannot get here soon enough.
Daryn Kirscht (Contributor): The teaser trailer for Avengers: Endgame is the kind of trailer that refuels my passion for film. It does everything (for the most part) exceptionally well, whether it be a heartbreaking opening from Tony Stark, a broken team of surviving Avengers coming to grips with the ending of Infinity War, or even a glimpse of new returning characters.
Sure, it doesn’t show much at all, but did anyone really expect Disney & Marvel to do so? The backlash would have been unbearable considering how some wished this film wouldn’t even have a trailer at all before release.
Either way, the dark and ominous tone that the trailer exudes – not to mention the incredible musical score accompanying it – delivers magnificently. I can firmly say this is the best movie trailer since Infinity War, possibly since the Comic-Con trailer of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s that good.
Michael Dworkis (Senior Editor): Perfect.
We’ve come to expect high impact action, the cynical banter, and the hype for an exciting thrill ride. However, this would not have fit the current state of the cinematic MCU. We last left our heroes, well, what is left of them, as defeated and lost. The somber tone and chilling dialogue, coping with grief and loss is exactly what this trailer should be. I’m sure trailers leading closer to the release will have some action and fight scenes.
We know going into this film, humanity is reeling from the devastating impact of a higher being erasing half of the population. This is something unfathomable, but imagine the mental impact this has on a regular person, witnessing a family member just vanish away. Now imagine the heroes who took the job of preventing this, failing, and watching their friends and loved ones disappear as a result of their failure.
There may be a glimmer of hope. It might be Paul Rudd.
