Last week’s mid-season premiere was a pretty strong episode, and with The Walking Dead tradition; usually after a strong episode, we unfortunately have filler episodes that are meaningless. Was tonight’s episode one of those, or surprisingly pretty solid?

At the end of last week’s episode, Alpha (Samantha Morton) and some whisperers had Luke (Dan Fogler) and Alden (Callan McAuliffe) cornered, and it doesn’t look good for them. Tara, and Luke’s friends go out trying to search for them, but they have no luck. They did find their horses slashed and eaten by walkers, so they’re getting nervous, thinking that Luke and Alden might be walker chow by now.

Henry (Matthew Lintz) is still locked up in the Hilltop prison, and in the other cell is Lydia (Cassady McClincy). Darryl (Norman Reedus) uses Henry to hopefully have Lydia open up and let the group know the whereabouts of Alpha — how many people are in their group, and what kind of person are they up against. Lydia tells them how it all started for them, so throughout the episode there are flashbacks of Alpha’s beginning. And oh man, are we in for a wild ride for what alpha is capable of doing.

Luke’s friends decide to sneak out during the evening to try and find he and Alden, but to no avail. At the end of the episode, they’re coming back to the Hilltop, while at the same time Darryl is about to figure out what to do with Lydia based on the information they get  about Alpha and her Whisperers. It seems like all is good, until we see the Whisperers and Alpha approaching Hilltop’s front gate. Alpha is there for one thing only, she’s there for them to give back Lydia.

Overall I thought it was a terrific episode. It might not have been as strong of an episode as last week’s. However, it was still pretty entertaining, especially for Alpha’s backstory, knowing what kind of person/threat the group is getting ready to go up against. Next week’s episode looks very promising, and a potential start for another battle upon our survivors with the new threat of the Whisperers.
