Rat Queens Swamp Romp #1 is written & lettered by Ryan Ferrier, illustrated by Orscilaa Petraites, and colored by Marco Lesko. Rat Queens is published by Image Comics.
This Special kicks off with our favorite Rat Queens in a tavern. They’re doing one of their favorite things, being super responsible and scouting new work. Ok, I’m lying. But, they are doing one of their favorite things. Drinking. Unfortunately for them this is their last round. It’s not last call or anything, the Queens are just flat broke.
But, luckily for them an elderly and sickly man enters the tavern asking for help. He is carrying a large bloody parcel. What ever could be within the parcel? Well, if you were paying attention to the cover art you can probably put 2 and 2 together. And, I am not technically spoiling anything by telling you. Dude drops a unicorn head on the table before the Queens.
The man’s name is Gossamer Hornwood. He tells the Queen’s that he’s suffering from a deadly disease and will die soon. But, that he would like them to find the person or creature responsible for decapitating his beloved unicorn (translate that last bit in the worst way you can). He offers them payment in his vast fortune that he’s saved his entire life. He won’t need it soon.
After much arguing back and forth the Queens decide they need money. So, they take on the task of finding the responsible party. I can’t really go into much more detail here without spoiling the heck out of this special.
But, I can tell you some things that you can look forward to in this special. First off, you get to learn why Unicorns exist. Secondly, you get to learn what’s been killing off the unicorns, and why. Third, well thrilling heroics from our Queens. Oh, and blood and hilarious violence. Lots and lots of blood.
Rat Queens Swap Romp is a brilliant story about unicorns, magic, and disgusting diseases that exist deep within the swamp. That last bit will make you laugh your ass off once you read this amazing special. The Queens are back, and they’re more fun than ever.
