In February HBO struck the pop culture world upside the head with an out-of-left-field teaser for Westworld Season 3 during the Super Bowl. For me, it was the highlight of the entire evening outside the food I picked up.
Today at San Diego Comic Con, the official Westworld Season 3 dropped. After multiple viewings, one can conclude this may in fact be the ambitious season of the extremely ambitious sci-fi series.
Now this concept might worry some fans of the series. Let’s face Season 2 wasn’t exactly the easiest season to follow, and that finale left a lot of viewers really angry at the series. Well, besides a trailer, there’s a lot of news making the rounds about the series. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly producers of the series have stated this season is much less confusing that Season 2.
That’s god because there is a ton to unpack in this trailer. We’ve got Deloros (Evan Rachel Wood), and Charlotte (Tessa Thompson) out in the real world (and not Westworld) and we know they’re plotting something huge against Delos, and probably humankind. We know from the teaser that Aaron Paul is joining the kid, and looks to be on Team Dolores. If you’re paying attention to the trailer you’ll notice a fleeting glimpse of Emmy award-winning actress/writer Lena Waithe on Team Deloros too. We already know from the teaser that NFL running back Marshawn Lynch is affiliated with Paul and Waithe’s characters. and hip hop star Kid Cudi iBoth of these additions to the cast are wildly exciting.
Speaking of additions we see our first looks at French actor Vincent Cassel (a member of Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13) is on board, and Irish actor Tommy Flanagan (Gladiator, Sons of Anarchy). We know from the teaser that musician Kid Cudi is on board as well.
The unpacking of this dense as hell trailer includes Maeve (Thandie Newton), and Hector (Rodrigo Santoro) in a World War II setting where they’re battling Nazis. We get allusions from Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) that he’s here to potentially combat Deloros and bring someone with him who could stop Deloros. Given the fact we see him and Hector scrap in the trailer, it could easily mean we’re going to get the Deloros vs. Maeve fight teased in Season 2.
Oh, and there’s a whole bunch of amazing sci-fi landscapes, and definitive issues that are happening between humans and actual robots (not hosts) happening in the real world.
This season is going to be absolutely wild.
Westworld Season 3 premieres on HBO in 2020.
