It’s been a wild day at D23.
Disney has gone all in on announcements for their soon-to-be-launched streaming service Disney+. Earlier in the day we saw posters for the live action version of Lady & The Tramp, plus the announcements a new Bill Hader/Anna Kendrick/Billy Eichner Christmas film, and a slew of Marvel related properties coming to the service.
However, the biggest news (so far) was everything related to the first ever live action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. This morning we saw the poster, which was extremely cool. Then this evening the official first trailer for the series dropped. Take our money Disney, we’re hooked.
The series follows a bounty hunter named The Mandalorian (who strikes a resemblance to Boba Fett) in a world set a few years post-Return of the Jedi, but pre-Force Awakens.
The series stars Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell/The Red Viper) as the title character. It features former MMA star Gina Carano, Oscar nominee Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Werner Herzog, comedian Bill Burr, Mark Boone Junior (Sons of Anarchy), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Emily Swallow (The Mentalist), Ming-Na Wen (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and the voice of actor/director Taika Waititi.
The trailer gives us a quick glimpse into the vast universe of the Mandalorian, as well as glimpses of various characters including the Waititi voiced droid IG-11. We even get a quick line out of Pascal’s titular character, “Bounty hunting is a complicated business.”
The hype is real people.
Jon Favreau serves as the showrunner as well as a writer, creator, and executive producer. Star Wars honcho Kathleen Kennedy along with Dave Filoni (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Colin Wilson (War of the Worlds) serve as executive producers.
The Mandalorian premieres on Disney+ on November 12, the official launch date of the streaming service. Disney+ is available for $6.99 a month, or in a $12.99 per month bundle with Hulu and ESPN+ included.
Enjoy the Mandalorian trailer everyone.
