After two days of very cryptic teases and messages and Instagram posts from parties involved, all the fan and reporter hype and speculation paid off with the announcement of the Hella Mega Tour.
Presented by Harley Davidson, the tour is a collaboration of three of the most popular alt/rock bands of the 21st century: Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer.
Kicking off on June 13 in Paris, the stadium tour will take the three rock groups across the UK, Europe and North America. Green Day will also play several dates solo throughout Europe and Asia, with more tour dates to be announced.
For Green Day, the tour comes on the heels of their newly announced thirteenth studio album, Father of All…, dropping February 7 from Reprise/Warner Records. The group also released the titular single from the album at the same time as the tour announcement. The album marks their return to writing new material since 2016’s Revolution Radio.
All three bands followed the announcement with new music and announcements to coincide with the tour. Fall Out Boy also released a new single Dear Future Self from their new Greatest Hits: Believers Never Die – Volume 2, coming November 15, and Weezer’s The End of the Game comes from the new album Van Weezer, set to release May 15, 2020.
The announcement comes as an impossible dream come true for millions of rock fans all over the world, with some of the most talented and influential songwriters in the history of the genre all touring and playing together. Who could possibly guess how many hours have been spent in basements and cars and bedrooms jamming out to all three groups? “When I Come Around,” “Thnks fr th Mmrs” and “Beverly Hills” have all earned a few dozen plays (according to my iTunes account) at least. This tour promises to be a punk rock moment to remember.
Green Day has proved itself time and again one of the most resilient and iconic rock bands of all time, continuing to inspire new generations of musicians and songwriters well into their third decade as a band. With a good 15 years on both their touring companions, they have amassed five Grammy wins and a massively impressive following spanning every demographic imaginable. While Fall Out Boy and Weezer cannot quite make the same claims having only formed in 2001, their creative lyrics and catchy hooks haves stood the test of time as more than just a few good ear worms.
Tickets for the Hella Mega Tour go on presale on Ticketmaster for American Express, Green Day Fan Club and Platinum members on September 16, and to the general public on Friday September 20.
