2019 has been an absolutely wild year for professional wrestling. On Sunday things are about to get a little wilder.
Lucha Libre AAA (commonly referred to as AAA) runs The Hulu Theater at Madison Square with a star-studded card. The company, which was founded in 1992, announced during Wrestlemania week this year that’d be running a show in New York City. Originally booked for “The World’s Most Famous Arena” Madison Square Garden, the show was moved to the adjacent Hulu Theater.
This is the first the renowned lucha company has run in New York City since 1994 when the company ran the then Theater in Madison Square Garden (the current Hulu Theater). That event saw a legendary main event featuring Konnan, Cien Caras (father of Alberto del Rio) and Perro Aguayo vs. “Love Machine” Art Barr, Eddie Guerrero, and Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
This Sunday’s show, which starts at 6 p.m., has announced four matches as of press time.
The first announced match is rematch from this year’s Triplemania — Blue Demon Jr. vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. These two have been embroiled in a feud for the majority of 2019, and it has been a bloody, violent affair between the iconic second generation stars. Their Triplemania match actually might have been one of the bloodiest, non-death match bouts of 2019.
Another Triplemania rematch of sorts will also take place. A trios match finds former UFC Heavyweight Champion “El Toro” Cain Velasquez teaming with IMPACT Wrestling Heavyweight Champion, and former AAA Latin American Champion Psycho Clown taking former Rey de Reyes (Rey Escorpion), former Megacampion Texano Jr., and the incredible upstart Taurus. This match is going to be wild as Cain showed he’s more than just another former MMA guy going into a ring throwing hands and slapping on a submission. No, at Triplemania he brought out his lucha training, while wearing a mask, and blew the doors off the venue. I expect more of the same here.
The third match announced might be the match of the night as the current AAA Reina de Reyes “Undeniable” Tessa Blanchard takes on former champion, and current IMPACT Wrestling Knockouts Champion “La Wera Loca” Taya Valkyrie (who beat Blanchard for the title). This is going to be the definition of hard hitting.
The final match announced is for the hotly contested AAA Tag Team Titles. The current champions Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix (The Lucha Bros) will take on LAX — Santana and Ortiz. Of course there’s bad blood here as Santana and Ortiz recently debuted in All Elite Wrestling’s All Out and laid out The Lucha Bros.
It was announced recently that IMPACT Wrestling, a partner of AAA, will be presenting the show. So we’re expecting involvement from them on this show as well.
