Comic Review: Going to the Chapel #2

Going to the Chapel #2 is published by Action Lab Entertainment under their Danger Zone imprint. It is written and created by David Pepose with art by Gavin Guidry and colors by Elizabeth Kramer.

In my issue #1 review, I said Grandma Harriet was my favorite character. Now I can’t decide between her and Sheriff Walter Reagan. Both of them make me literally laugh out loud. They are just so over it with these younger people and I’m not sure what that says about me as a person, but I can’t say I wouldn’t also be sighing heavily dealing with these people. It’s clear the David Pepose is making a clever joke, because I have to admit, I can absolutely see someone posting on Social Media about a hostage situation they are currently in.

I feel for Emily, I do. She’s scared she’s making a mistake and suddenly this ex-lover shows up like its destiny, of course she wants to run away with him – run away from this wedding and everything she fears it means. However, Jesse is a good guy, Lucy is clearly a loving and sweet best friend, and Natalie might be extra but she isn’t so bad, and to just up and leave them all to fend for themselves against armed men in Elvis masks so she can run away with a bank robber?

That’s where I want to slap her and tell her to get it together. She isn’t going to have much of a choice now that Tom has revealed his even truer colors. I mean, the dude broke up with you via text after abandoning you in a hotel following his latest heist, how surprised can you really be by that ending reveal? Still, even in this, I know how Emily feels. Pepose is skillfully weaving a story of not just humor, but incredibly complex emotions.

What started as one story, has somehow split in to two and is slowly forming back in to one. It’s really neat to watch it unfold. It was the story of Emily and her family, now it’s the story of a hostage situation alongside a warped romance. Apart, these things really aren’t that unique, but by putting them together, we have a much deeper and more entertaining story. I’m honestly a little sad we only have 2 issues left of Emil and co. but I’m also super intrigued to see what will happen.

OVERALL SCORE: 9 / 10
