NWA Powerrr Episode 5, ‘James Storm vs. Colt Cabana’

NWA Powerrr

NWA Powerrr Episode 5 begings with a little recap and review of the past few weeks and some of the drama around the NWA World and National Championships is played before Jim Cornette and Joe Galli welcome us back into the fire. They somehow manage not to get accosted or interrupted this week before they can throw it over to David Marquez.

His first guest is main eventer, Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana who is “ready to go” in his bid to regain the NWA National championship from “Cowboy” James Storm later tonight. His second guest is master thespian Aron Stevens who is still fuming over his defeat and disrespecting last week at the hands of Ricky Starks. He blames it on “ring rust” and that his career accomplishments prove that. He challenges “Stroke Daddy” to a match rooted in NWA tradition later in the evening. His attempts to culture “the great unwashed” with a few words from his great-great-great-great… (you get it…) grandfather… none other than William Shakespeare himself are greatly rejected and he storms off in a huff.

NWA World’s heavyweight Champion and “National Treasure,” Nick Aldis announces that NWA wrestling stars will be playable characters in the upcoming (2020) video game, RetroMania!  Two interesting things to note is that 1) this is a legitimate commercial and 2) the in-game video clearly shows WWE Hall of Fame inductees, Hawk & Animal of… The Road Warriors. Well played.

The Dawsons vs Matthew Mims & Jordan Kingsley

Mims & Kingsley manage to get a little tandem offense in at the beginning but Zane Dawson turns it back around with one right hand.  The Dawsons get more fluid double teams in than we’ve seen thus far and sadistically prolong the match with a pullup at the two count.  Tandem power bomb and Zane pins Mims.

Your winners by pinfall… The Dawsons!

After the match, The Dawsons tell David Marquez and the whole world that, since they’ve already beaten #1 contenders, Eddie Kingston & Homicide, they deserve a shot at the tag titles.   The aforementioned street kings come out and congratulates The Dawsons on last weeks win. Interference or not, no DQ is no DQ. But, if they want to take their place in line, The Dawsons will have a straight up match with them.  The Dawsons say that they’ll “think about it.”

Joe Galli talks with Tim Storm about his recent losing streak and possibility of retirement.  Tim says that a lot is going through his head right now. He doesn’t regret taking the challenge against Nick Aldis with the stipulation that he can no longer contend for the Ten Pounds of Gold again.  It’s an honor to hold the National or Tag Team Championships but the fact that the World Title is no longer in the cards for him is tough to swallow. Champion, Nick Aldis, walks in to respectfully pull Tim aside for a moment.  The mic manages to pick up their convo and Aldis telling Storm not to let people like Eli Drake get into his head, not to say anything that he’ll regret because anything is possible, and to always remember that he built the NWA up to where it is now.

Ashley Vox vs Thunder Rosa

With a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, elbow strikes and repeated kicks, Rosa targets the lower back.  Vox is scrappy but a body scissors slows her down. A headscissor by Vox goes right into “The Real Catch” (a modified octopus hold) but Thunder Rosa breaks free and hits a double stomp onto Vox’s back from the top turnbuckle!

Your winner by pinfall… Thunder Rosa!

Thunder Rosa attacks Ashley right after the match but Marti Belle chases her off.  David Marquez joins her at ringside. Marti doesn’t know what Thunder Rosa is about but she knows that her “major amiga” Allysin Kay saying that she’s “not ready” for a title shot isn’t what she’s about. Allysin Kay comes out to address her but is attacked from behind by Thunder Rosa. Thunder Rosa drags the champ into the ring. Marti gets in the ring and, just like last week, Thunder Rosa offers a hand to her as the drums play faster and faster.  This time, Marti is on board and kicks Allysin Kay square in the mouth.

The mystery of “The Question” continues with the repeated video vignette.

Ricky Starks vs Aron Stevens

Aron Stevens is back at the podium to tell Ricky Starks (the insolent knave!) that there is no way that he can be beaten in a two-out-of-three falls match.  Stevens takes off his robe to hilariously reveal nude trunks to offset his neon pink knee pads. Our former “intellectual savior” attacks Starks as he takes his ring gear off but Stroke Daddy sidesteps and schoolboys Stevens for the first fall in three seconds!  Starks manages to quote Charles Dickens’ (taxing Joe Galli’s literary recall in the process) and controls the pace of the match with quick use of the ropes and a Tornado DDT. When Stevens stops to gloat and curtsey once he gains control, Ricky hits a rollup from his back to get the second fall.  Stevens is beside himself as the crowd chants “You got beat!”

Your winner by consecutive pinfalls… Ricky Starks!

James Storm (c) vs Colt Cabana for the NWA National Championship

Colt’s tag team partner, Ken Anderson comes out the ring in support and Cowboy is accompanied by that Iago with eight pack abs, Eli Drake. Colt gets in a lot of offense, garnering crowd support with his unorthodox hybrid style. His signature moves like the “Cabana-canrana” and “Flying… *ahem* Apple,” prompt Corny and Joe to remark on his athleticism for his size (Colt’s listed at 240lbs these days.)  Storm, meanwhile, plays a more hard-hitting and opportunistic style hitting a DDT off a Colt that was crotched on the second rope and a TKO cutter over the top rope and out to the floor. Colt has no quit, fighting out of a leglock on his previous injury and even kicking out of The Eye of the Storm, Cowboy’s signature spinning crucifix toss!

As Cowboy readies for the “Last Call” superkick, Eli Drake gets up on the apron to jaw at the referee to neither competitor’s benefit.  Ken Anderson doesn’t like it and pulls Eli down. Eli backs away, begging off any dust up but it’s just luring him in for a sucker right hand that drops Anderson.  Then, out of nowhere, the silent but sultry Kamille, Nick Aldis’ “insurance policy,” shoves Eli Drake from behind as Anderson recovers in time to drop The Defiant One with a shot of his own.  Kamille then steps over Eli Drake to back Anderson off, seemingly to ensure that the scales stay balanced. Meanwhile, nearly forgotten in the ring, James Storm gets distracted for a moment and get put on his back with a Superman pin for 1… 2… and 3!  Afterwards, Cowboy accepts the defeat graciously but tells Cabana that they’ll be seeing each other again real soon.

Your winner by pinfall and NEW NWA National Heavyweight Champion… Colt Cabana!

But oh no!  We’re not done yet!  The Dawsons are out to answer Kingston & Homicide’s challenge and they want to do it right here and right now!

The Dawsons vs Eddie Kingston & Homicide with the winners getting a shot at the NWA Tag team titles

It may not be “No DQ” like last week, but there’s plenty of biting, fishhooking, eye gouging, and anything else that was outlawed even in the early days of UFC.  The Dawsons use their generous size advantage but they’ve got vulnerable targets that Kingston and Homicide home in on. It looks like the boys from New York are gaining an advantage when Tom Latimer and Royce Isaacs, the NWA tag champs, The Wild Cards, show up. Dave Dawson gets dropkicked on top of the champs and they take exception to that.  They hold Homicide up from climbing to the top and The Dawsons pounce on the advantage.

But what’s this?  Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, The Rock n’ Roll Express, are here!  They spin Latimer and Isaacs around and start laying in right hands. The Wild Cards have had enough of this match and get going towards the back.

In the ring, The Dawsons go to sandwich Homicide with a double avalanche but he ducks out of the way.  Kingston hits a dropkick on Zane and a spinning backfist on Dave. Gringo Cutter on Dave by Homicide! It’s all over and The Rock n’ Roll come in the ring to help celebrate.

Your winners by pinfall… Eddie Kingston & Homicide!

NWA Powerrr Episode 5 Reaction:  One hour. Not two hours or three hours.

Last week, Thunder Rosa showed up. This week, she had a match and turned Marti Belle in all of about four minutes of interaction from both nights combined.

Aron Stevens met Ricky Stark last week and they’ve established a rivalry without anyone’s wife or dog or daddy’s gold watch getting involved.

The Dawsons are still big brutes who can hurt you but it’s Kingston & Homicide who are going to face the champs.  The Dawsons aren’t going to have to eat dog food or wear dresses for a month. The Wild Cards may face The Rock n’ Roll Express in the meantime.

And what is going on with Nick Aldis and Kamille and Eli Drake and Tim Storm?  What Game of Thrones kind of $#!+ is going on here? I don’t know but I wanna find out next week.

That’s how you do it.
