Review: NWA Powerrr Episode 9 ‘One More Time’ aka The Season Finale

NWA Powerrr

Joe Galli lets us know up front that this is the “season finale” of NWA Powerrr, thanking all of us for our viewership.  While that might sound like a huge red flag, it is about that time of year when your regular network shows are going on hiatus and NWA has had their next tapings scheduled for December since before they first aired.

“Stroke Daddy” Ricky Starks vs Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana

Before we even get underway, Aron Stevens and The Question Mark interrupt by getting to the podium and lamenting that title shots get handed out without rhyme or reason.  It should be noted that Colt Cabana’s NWA National Title was not slated to be on the line in this match and has been explicitly stated as such. Cabana says that, is Aron Stevens can beat Ricky Starks, he will give Stevens a title shot.

“Stroke Daddy” Ricky Starks vs Aron Stevens

After some lightning fast, hard-hitting offense by Ricky Starks, Aron Stevens goes down with a possible knee injury.  While the referee and David Marquez conference with Stevens on the apron, his tag team partner, the Question Mark, comes out in a show of concern… and hits Ricky Starks with The Mongrovian Spike at the first chance he gets.  Stevens makes a miraculous recovery and makes the pin to secure a future title shot!

A Special Interview with James Storm

It’s revealed that the 2-out-of-3 falls NWA World Heavyweight title match at December 14th’s “Into the Fire” pay-per-view on Fite will be refereed by the competitors’ choices: one at champion, Nick Aldis’ choosing, one at James Storm’s and, if needed, a coin flip will decide the referee to officiate the final fall.  James Storm is in his kitchen talking about his problems with NWA brass and the “conspiracy” against him. A number of unaired segments and matches are alluded to that supposedly includes proof of his mistreatment by the champion and the office.  He went to NWA senior referee, Brian Hebner, and got his word that he would officiate fairly. Storm says that, if Aldis’ choice of referee fails to call the match correctly, he will take it personally and take it to him on the spot. His ace in the hole?  The sweet nothing whispered into his ear by Kamille recently.

It’s unexpected, unexplainable, but also undeniable. The Question Mark has become wildly popular with NWA fans in their Atlanta studios and around the world.  A voiceover segment follows him to a convention chock full of wrestling legends (including some WWE Hall of Famers with the logo on full display!) and, the “It’s still real to me, damnit!” guy.

NWA stars past and present were in competition and in attendance at the recent WrestleCade Supershow, the highlight of which may have been a tense staredown and possible and open challenge by current champ Nick Aldis with former champion, The Great Muta!

David Marquez welcomes Melina out to ringside to talk about the women’s division.  She says that the women are doing amazing things but, up until her return, they’ve been little more than a commercial break.  When she gets going, the NWA will have a “real” champion. Allysin Kay comes out and says that, if Melina is willing to fight her own battles, they can do it right now!  Melina looks like she’s into it but the bell never rings and it’s barely a minute until Marti Belle, Thunder Rosa, and those crazy drums do their dirty work and leave the champ on the canvas.

NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Nick Aldis, addresses James Storm’s allegations of conspiracies.  He says that the triple threat “qualifier match” that was unaired and unrecognized was something Storm never earned or deserved and, because of the chaotic nature of the finish, he didn’t truly win either.  His choice of referee? Someone who knows just what the title means… former champion, Tim Storm! And the biggest proof of his desire for a fair match? Kamille will be given the night off.

The Rock n’ Roll Express vs Wild Card (c) for the NWA Tag Team Championship

Maybe it’s rose-colored glasses but, despite having much less snap to their offense, Rock n’ Roll look as smooth as ever in their pacing and footwork out there. They do what they always do and hang with bigger, stronger (and MUCH younger) opponents by way of quick thinking and sound teamwork. A little ironic role reversal as Robert Gibson actually “plays Ricky Morton” up until the O’Connor roll heard ‘round the world.  Hey hey my my! Rock n’ Roll will never die! New NWA tag champs for the ninth time!

After the match, Jim Cornette gets into the ring to congratulate them.  Despite some insistence by NWA and their performers to the contrary, the lack of Corny’s commentary last week and his absence of his onscreen presence or even mention has been noticeable.  Joe Galli takes the time to thank Jim Cornette on screen for his work with the NWA throughout his career.

Nick Aldis obliquely addresses this with his announcement of a new addition to the NWA broadcast team… the former Bad News Barrett, Stu Bennett!

NWA Powerrr Episode 9 and the entire first season is currently streaming on the NWA’s YouTube page.
