Joe Russo’s Almost Dead & Head Count ‘Make Democracy RAD Again’ in Brooklyn

Pop Break Live: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead ‘Make Democracy RAD Again’ at The Brooklyn Bowl

Music and politics have always gone hand in hand.

However, during Thanksgiving week, music and politics had a most unique night at The Brooklyn Bowl.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, one of the premier Grateful Dead cover/tribute acts in the world, performed a benefit for HeadCount on November 25. HeadCount is, “a national non-profit organization that works with musicians to promote participation in democracy in the United States. It is best known for registering voters at concerts – having signed up 600,000 voters since its launch in 2004.”

The concert, saw the audience vote on the songs they wanted performed at the show. The event was live streamed by venerated rock ‘n’ roll magazine Relix. The set consisted of all Dead covers outside of a covers of The Almman Brothers’ “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” (the first time they played this song since 2017 at Brooklyn Bowl) Cannon’s Jug Stompers’ “Viola Lee Blues,” the Jerry Garcia Band’s “Rubin and Cherise” and Bruce Springsteen’s classic “Atlantic City.”
