Pop Break Live: Overcoats at The Fillmore in Philadelphia, PA
Overcoats, the music duo from Brooklyn, played Philadelphia’s Fillmore on January 31, opening up for Cold War Kids. For those who got there early enough to catch their set, it was a powerful performance and actually inspiring at times.
If you asked me to describe their particular genre, picking one would be difficult. Their “sound” runs the gamut of folk, electronic, soul and pop with maybe a tinge of punk — basically very unique and definitely refreshing! The duo, Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, really starting turning heads in 2017 with their critically acclaimed album YOUNG. It didn’t hurt to have NPR list it as one of the very best albums of the year.
Overcoats were backed by a female drummer and guitarist and really impressed with their melodic sounds and hypnotic harmonies. The incredible chemistry of the four women on stage was really obvious. The duo was charming and funny as well and really won this crowd over early on. When they announced that they’d be playing The Foundry at The Fillmore in Philly in April (a secret they apparently just let out of the bag ) the audience really responded.
