Marvel’s Runaways (Hulu, FreeForm 2017-2019

This past November, Disney+, Disney’s new streaming service, dropped. For those of us who love the Disney brand and all the other brands that now fall under its vast corporate umbrella (such as Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel), not signing up wasn’t even an option. We quickly tried to show our kids non-Pixar stuff, inquired as to whether or not Gargoyles holds up (it does,) and geeked out over The Mandalorian. With more time on my hands now, I’ve begun diving deeper into Disney+’s offerings, and I found a little hidden treasure tucked away in the Marvel tab called Marvel’s Runaways.
I ended a 30+ year comic book addiction a few years back and it’s been a long time since I should have been able to identify with teen angst, but damned if Runaways isn’t my new jam. With few recognizable faces and lesser known characters, it doesn’t jump out among The Winter Soldiers and End Games…and it doesn’t have to. The mostly young cast makes you care about all of them, even the gangsters, zealots, and members of a murderous cult. It blends high school melodrama and comic book melodrama in the vein of Joss Whedon’s ’90s TV classic Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, while feeling fresh and entertaining in its own way.
If you haven’t had the pleasure, do yourself a favor and check it out for yourself, either on Disney+ or on its original streaming home of Hulu.
