The BreakCast: Gladiator 20th Anniversary Retrospective

It’s that time again. Time for brothers Aaron and Josh Sarnecky to celebrate another movie anniversary. Today it’s Gladiator, the acclaimed historical epic directed by Ridley Scott.

Gladiator opened in theaters on May 5, 2000. It stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Spencer Treat Clark, and Richard Harris.

The film follows former Roman general Maximus (Crowe) as he works his way through the world of gladiators in order to exact his revenge on Emperor Commodus (Phoenix) — who not only murdered Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Harris) but Maximus’ wife and son.

According to Wikipedia, Gladiator grossed $187.7 million in the United States and Canada and $269.9 million in other territories for a total of $457.6 million, against a production budget of $103 million.

Gladiator was nominated for 12 and won five Academy Awards, among them Best Picture and Best Actor (Crowe).

Podcast topics include the action, the performances, and the film’s historical accuracy. The brothers also compare it to other Ridley Scott films and discuss the many sequel rumors that have spawned over the years.

For Josh and Aaron’s previous podcast, you can listen to them talk about The Road to El Dorado for its 20th anniversary. You can also read Josh’s latest Couch Potato column.
