Good Bye to All That Episode #2: Hulu’s Normal People

Welcome to the second episode of Good Bye to All That – Pop Break’s television podcast series that focuses on season (and sometimes series) finales of shows you absolutely need to be watching.

Pop Break’s Television Editor Alex Marcus is joined by former Television Editor and current senior writer/podcast Matt Taylor – who you’ve heard on And The Winner Still is Like, and The Way Too Early Oscar Prediction Podcast.

This episode they talk about Hulu’s smash sensation, Normal People. Normal People is an Irish series based on the novel (of the same name) by author Sally Rooney — her second novel. The series examines the relationship of Marianne Sheriden (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) from the final days of “secondary school” (high school) and their years as students at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The series was adapted by Rooney, and Alice Birch (Lady Macbeth), and Mark O’Rowe (Intermission, Perrier’s Bounty). The series was directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Room) and Hettie Macdonald (Doctor Who – ‘Blink‘).

The 12 episode series premiered on BBC iPlayer on April 26, Stan in Australia and BBC One on April 27, RTÉ One in Ireland on April 28, and Hulu in the U.S. on April 29.

In the episode they discuss:

-How faithful the series is to the acclaimed Sally Rooney novel of the same name.
-The incredible performances of series leads Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.
-The series intimate approach to interpersonal relationships as they shift and change over time.
-Whether it deserves the mantle of “the best millennial romance.”
